Field of Study: | Corrections and Criminal Justice, Other Youth Services/Administration
|
Description: | John Abbott College is the only English college in Québec to offer a program in Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention. Courses in this three-year program provide students with a solid foundation in applied social sciences, criminology, penal law and psychology. Students are encouraged to participate in community programs connected with correctional studies to allow them to exercise and develop human relation skills. Graduates will be prepared to act as authority figures and role models. As part of a team, they will also develop professional skills enabling them to work in a helping relationship to facilitate social reintegration. We offer a wide variety of stage settings in French and in English. Almost all of our program teachers are bilingual.
Student activities and fieldwork play an integral part in the program. Students apply their knowledge during four practical fieldwork placements totaling 600 hours of experience. Fieldwork courses involve actual youth and adult correctional work in settings such as youth rehabilitation centers, community organizations, schools, drug rehabilitation centers, prisons and halfway houses. Such placements require applicants to submit proof of Good Conduct (no criminal record) prior to the placement. The College cannot guarantee access to a placement if a student has a prior criminal record or whose conduct is deemed incompatible with their future duties. |
